Prospective Marriage Visa
If you’re engaged to an Australian citizen or permanent resident and want to begin your married life in Australia, the Prospective Marriage Visa (Subclass 300) could be the perfect pathway for you. The visa enables temporary entry to Australia for a period of 9–15 months from the date of your visa grant. You can marry your partner in Australia or travel to be married.

At Canberra Visa & Migration Services, we help couples navigate the visa process with confidence, ensuring every detail is handled professionally and efficiently — so you can focus on your future together.
What is the Prospective Marriage Visa (subclass 300)
The Prospective Marriage Visa, also known as the Fiancé Visa, allows you to travel to Australia to marry your Australian partner. It’s a temporary visa valid for nine months, during which you must get married and then apply for a Partner Visa (Subclass 820/801) to remain in Australia permanently.

This visa is ideal for couples who are engaged but not yet married and want to start their journey together in Australia.

Eligibility for a Prospective Marriage Visa
To be eligible for the Subclass 300 Visa, you must:
Be outside Australia when applying and when the visa is granted.
Both individuals must be 18 years or older.
Be sponsored by your fiancé(e) who is an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen.
Be in a genuine and ongoing relationship with your sponsor and not married to anyone else.
Have personally met your partner after turning 18.
Intend to marry your partner within nine months of the visa grant.
Meet the health and character requirements set by the Department of Home Affairs.
Cost and Processing Time
As of 2025, the application fee for the Prospective Marriage Visa starts from AUD 8,850, payable to the Department of Home Affairs.

Processing times typically range from 12 to 20 months, depending on your personal circumstances and the completeness of your application.
Permanent Residency
The prospective marriage visa is a pathway to permanent residency. It is a three-stage process which comprises the following steps:
Step 1:
Lodge a prospective marriage subclass 300 visa application, which, if granted, will allow you to travel to and reside in Australia for a period of up to 9 to 15 months to marry your Australian partner.
Step 2:
Once you have married your partner (within the 9–15-month visa period), you are then expected to lodge a combined application for an onshore partner subclass 820/801 visa.
Step 3:
Two years following lodgement of your combined subclass 820/801 visa application, the Department will assess whether you continue to satisfy the requirements for a grant of the subclass 801 visa, with a successful application resulting in a grant of permanent residence in Australia.

The Prospective Marriage Visa allows you to:
