The Australian government has recently made changes to the Genuine Temporary Entrant requirement for Student visas (subclass 500). Starting from 23 March 2024 it has replaced the Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement for student visas with a Genuine Student (GS) requirement.
Changes
This new change acknowledges that student visa holders will come to Australia to study and may then seek a legitimate pathway to permanent residence in Australia. It requires that the purpose of travel to Australia is study. Student visa applicants must be able to show an understanding that studying in Australia is the primary reason of their student visa.
The Department will assess the applicant’s overall personal circumstances when assessing whether they are a genuine student or not.The minimum test score for a student visa has increased from International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score 5.5 to 6.0.
The new application form
Student visa applicants will need to address the following questions
Give details of the applicant’s current circumstances. This includes ties to family, community, employment and economic circumstances.
Explain why the applicant wishes to study this course in Australia with this particular education provider. This must also explain their understanding of the requirements of the intended course and studying and living in Australia.
Explain how completing the course will be of benefit to the applicant.
How is Genuine Student assessed?
The GS criterion focuses on the assessment of the student’s intention to genuinely study in Australia. It considers factors including the applicant’s:
circumstances
immigration history
compliance with visa conditions and any other relevant matter.
This criterion acknowledges that post-study pathways are available for those who may be eligible.
Student guardians and people who lodged their student visa applications before 23 March 2024 still need to satisfy GTE. Dependents need to satisfy the genuine student dependent” criterion (not GTE).
